Elody's first home dumped her at the pound after she "got too old" - she was 5 years. Up until then, she had been tied to a dog house on a four foot chain. Passing strays impregnated her and she had raised several litters of puppies that were either sold or taken to the local pound.
Neglected and left outdoors, Elody also contracted heartworm from mosquitoes. When the volunteers at the dog pound told her story to DogSOS, we of course had to take her in. She was treated for the heartworms and after becoming healthy again she also found her new adoptive home.
Unfortunately, a year after adoption, Elody began showing unfriendly behavior towards new dogs and was returned to DogSOS. We then discovered that Elody had Inflammatory Mammary Carcinoma. We suspect that the discomforts associated with her type of cancer caused her to be weary of approaching dogs. Once on pain and inflammatory drugs, Elody became very accepting of new dogs again. Despite her illness, Elody remained positive and affectionate until the very end.
Elody lived her last 4 months surrounded with the love of her foster Mom and her friends at DogSOS. She passed away peacefully on September 20th 2006 in the arms of her foster. She is dearly missed. Our hearts go out to all the other dogs left neglected and outside, alone in the cold.
Help us, to help them. If you can't donate towards our cause, then please say a prayer for this sweet, loving and loyal girl, who went through so much, and deserved so much more. She will forever be in our hearts, on this earth and in the next. |
